Introduction

This document maps out each of the Metropolis Centre of Excellence’s research planning, design and approval processes. It also identifies the relevant committees and individuals involved at each stage. The purpose of the document is i) to provide Metropolis Project stakeholders with a better understanding of these processes and ii) to identify the key players at each Centre. With a table for each Centre, Research Pathways describes the various stages through which a research project passes before becoming one of Metropolis’ funded research projects. These descriptions should highlight the significant differences in the organization of research activities among the four Centres of Excellence.

Turning to the organization of the document, there are four sections, one for each Centre of Excellence, which describe the research planning, design and approval processes. In addition a number of appendices complement the report by providing lists of members for each of the Centre’s committees. Research Pathways will be updated regularly to reflect changes to the Centres’ organization around research planning as they are implemented.

The committees and other bodies mentioned below are described solely as per their role in the research, planning, design and approval processes. As a result, the text will not reflect their complete mandate. Further information on the Metropolis Centres of Excellence is available from the Centres directly or on their respective web sites. At the end of each section one can find the Centres’ web addresses. Access to these is also available through the Metropolis National site at http://www.canada.metropolis.net.

In addition, each Centre produced a Mid-Term Review Report in April 1999. These documents are rich in information about Centre organization and research activities. All the Centres have posted their reports on their web site.
