Census data are used to describe the increasingly multicultural nature of metropolitan Canada, & to examine the urban & regional contexts of Asian migrant settlement & their distributional & spatial patterns highlighting: Toronto & Ottowa-Hall (Ontario), Vancouver (British Columbia), Montreal (Quebec), Edmonton & Calgary (Alberta), & Winnipeg (Manitoba). Composition of migrant flows to Canada have changed recently with increased numbers of Asian, Caribbean, & Latin American migrants who settle in larger metropolitan areas. Implications of these changes for the study of housing & labor markets are discussed; also considered is the inheritance of the conflict between outsider (hegemonic white Canadian society) & insider minority community views of urban life. 7 Tables, 4 Figures, 3 Maps, 15 References. Mercer, John (1995): Canadian cities and their immigrants: new realities. Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science 538, 169-184.
An overview of the period since 1960 reveals that immigrants to Canada have been increasingly nonwhite and non-European, and exhibit greater cultural diversity than ever before. Because of this diversity and because new immigrants settle in a few metropolitan centers, Canadian society is faced with major urban changes. Immigrants impact education, health care, business development, and labor markets. For instance, large numbers of children who do not speak English (or French) create an administrative and fiscal challenge for some school districts. Health care providers are faced with a new variety of patient beliefs about illness and medicine. In some urban areas, the business landscape has been transformed to meet the needs of the growing Asian population. These changes and challenges have caused some to question Canada's immigrant- absorbing ability and others to see the possibilities of economic and cultural growth. 2 tables, 4 figures.
